An Interview

Getting ready for the big event

An interview with Saab Car Museum Manager Peter Bäckström

1) The Saab 60th Anniversary celebrations take place between June 7th and June 10th. Tell us about some of the events and activities you have planned.
The idea of the festival is to offer something for everyone - Saab enthusiasts, Saab fanatics and the general public alike. Visitors will have the chance attendseminars and presentations by Saab's designers, management and Saab celebrities, and join us for a festival dinner on Saturday evening with a 3-course dinner, live entertainment and guest speakers. The festival dinner is for 1800 people, and tickets are already on sale - visit the Saab Festival website for ticket information.

Sunday is the actual anniversary of our first ever press conference in Linköping, and we’ll be holding a ‘Most Beautiful Saab’ competition, and there’ll be a ‘Saabs and Stars’ VIP cruise, with many celebrities of past and present in attendance, including rally legends Erik Karlsson and Stig Blomqvist as well as Saab’s CEO Jan Åke Jonsson!

The Saab Museum will be open to all for the duration of the festival, and visitors can see the Aero X Concept car and the Saab 9-3 Convertible E100 Hybrid Concept. We’re also hoping to have the Saab 9-5 E100 Concept car on display, as well as the regular line-up of historical Saabs.

Saab enthusiasts will have the opportunity to pick up rare spare parts for Saabs of all kinds, both at our sale of new and old stock parts, and at the Saab Free Market, where visitors can trade their own cars and parts. So if you’re looking for a right wing panel for your Saab 99, there’s no better place to find it!

2) You’re planning a track day on the Saturday at the Kinnekulle racetrack – can anyone participate?
More or less – Anyone with a Saab can participate, provided you have a roadworthy car and insurance, your own helmet and a driving license. We can accommodate up to 300 cars on the day, and the cars will be divided into heats, to give the Saab 92 drivers a chance against the 9-3 Viggens! Full entry and safety details can be found on our website at www.saabfestival.se. It will make for a great day out – particularly since the Saab Performance Team will also be putting on their spectacular show.

3) What else is there to see and do in the Trollhättan area?
Amongst other things there will be a scenic Saab rally around Sweden’s beautiful west coast, and the Innovatum Science House will also be open, which is particularly interesting for families with children. Take a look at our website, where we have links to the relevant tourist authorities, who can also help with travel details and accommodation.

4) Will the presentations and seminars be in English?
In order to honour our international visitors, almost everything associated with the festival will be in English – seminars, interviews, Track Day commentary etc… We will also be broadcasting live in the Trollhättan area on Radio Saab 90.6, so visitors can follow the events even if they are not actually present. The majority of this will be broadcast in English as well.

5) Do visitors need to buy tickets in advance?
Not at all - just turn up and enjoy the party! The only thing you'll need to pre-register for is the festival dinner, since we are expecting a high demand. The numbers are of course limited.

6) How many people are involved in organising the festival?
It’s impossible to say, since as well as the people involved at Saab, we have had tremendous support from both the Swedish Saab Club and the Saab Turbo Club of Sweden, who have helped out with project groups, and who will be assisting us as marshals at the Track Day for example. They are the true Saab Ambassadors! We have also been lucky to have had the support of the Municipality and citizens of Trollhättan. I cannot thank everyone enough for all the hard work they have put in!

7) How many people do you expect to attend the festival?
Our conservative estimates put the figure at between 25 and 30,000 visitors over the four days, but who knows? It could be as many as 45,000…
